Apparently there is no economic down turn in Chicago or San Francisco. In fact they must be thinking of exporting jobs because they obviously have enough people employed in these two cities.
Let's start with Chicago. From the CBS2Chicago.com website, there is an interesting story how the city Turned down Wal-mart, a favorite whipping post for liberals.
All Wal-Mart wants to dois build 5 new stores while spending $120 million dollars to do so while creating 2,500 jobs that pay an average of $11.25 an hour.
For those thinking Wal-Mart is such a horrible place to work - I have to admit that I missed the story where people were being forced to work there - read this story in the New York Post about a reporter who got a job with Wal-Mart.
Out in San Francisco, they too are bursting with business. So much so that they have turned down American Apparel.
Statewide unemployment of 9.3%, 27 vacant store store fronts along Valenia Street, where American Apparel wanted to locate, is not a good enough reason to welcome a new business into the area.
What is the magical reasoning of the great citizens of SanFran? Well, "Magic," of course. That's right. Magic. That was the word of the day at Room 400, in San Francisco's City Hall.

"Valencia Street is a magical place," one speaker said. Another claimed that "Our neighborhood is a dream, a delicate flower." Others spoke of American Apparel as a "parasite" on their "ecosystem." Several local business owners testified that it was their "dream" to operate in such a "magical" place, and noted, with horror, that they might have to make alterations to their business plans if a new store opened in the area.
We can only hope that Chicago and San Francisco share their recipe for job creation with the rest of the nation.
